Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah

At Caesarea Philippi, Peter identifies Jesus as the Messiah, and Jesus begins to teach the disciples about the road to suffering.

Historical context

Jewish hopes for restoration took different forms under Roman occupation and local rule. Caesarea Philippi, with its prominent pagan and imperial associations, provides a striking setting for a confession about Jesus’ identity and kingdom.

Biblical significance

Peter’s confession is a turning point in the Gospel narrative, but Jesus immediately reshapes messianic expectation around rejection, death, and resurrection. Discipleship therefore means taking up the cross rather than seeking status through power.
