John receives the Revelation on Patmos

John receives a vision of Jesus Christ while exiled on Patmos and is commanded to write what he sees for the churches.

Revelationprophecywitness

Historical context

Patmos was an island in the Aegean, and the churches of Asia Minor lived within the political and religious pressures of the Roman imperial world. Revelation uses letters, visions, worship scenes, and symbolic imagery to strengthen communities facing compromise, suffering, and uncertainty.

Biblical significance

The book begins with the authority of the risen Jesus and the promise that God is revealing what must take place. John’s commission turns isolation into prophetic witness for a network of congregations.
