Jesus feeds the five thousand

Jesus feeds a vast crowd in a deserted place with five loaves and two fish, and the people eat until they are satisfied.

Historical context

Crowds followed Jesus through a rural landscape where food had to be carried and hospitality could be tested by sudden need. Shared bread in a wilderness setting evokes Israel’s manna story and the social importance of a meal provided for the vulnerable.

Biblical significance

The sign reveals Jesus’ compassion and abundance while echoing Moses, Elisha, and Israel’s wilderness provision. The twelve baskets left over point to fullness and to the shaping of a renewed people around Jesus’ table.
